Some policies need to do more than manage risk. They need to protect craftsmanship.
Granger Hertzog is a furniture and prop hire business with an impressive collection of over 30,000 physical assets - tangible pieces that productions rely on for texture, realism, and atmosphere. But as generative AI tools became increasingly normalised in creative workflows, a new kind of threat has emerged: content featuring hired items could be uploaded into AI systems to create digital replicas, build datasets, or “style reference” a look, all without without Granger Hertzog’s knowledge, consent, or compensation.
They weren’t trying to ban modern workflows. They were just trying to stop their real-world inventory becoming free training data.
“We learnt of Kelsey’s expertise following a fascinating webinar she gave on AI use in the film and television industries. We were keen to learn more about how we might protect our business model whilst embracing this rapidly developing technology and its positive uses.
Kelsey developed a deep understanding of our brand and needs, presented us with carefully considered options and was very supportive throughout.
We have ended up with a suite of documents which clearly explain our approach and are used in all new client contract negotiations. We particularly appreciated Kelsey’s communication style; no complex legal jargon, instead, clear, concise and human.”
The ask? Create a simple, plain-English customer-facing AI Usage Policy and update their Conditions of Hire in a way that would actually work in the industry. It needed to be clear enough for producers and photographers, robust enough to hold up when things get complicated, and fair enough that it would feel like implementing professional standards without making everyday post-production impossible.
The final suite of documents gives Granger Hertzog a legal foundation that mirrors how their clients actually work — while signalling something bigger: a commitment to responsible use, transparency, and trust.
