Legal advice designed for creative types
Legal advice designed for creative types.

In 2019, I wrote one of the first peer-reviewed research papers in the world to focus on genAI from a media law perspective. Since then, I’ve dedicated my career to helping performers, authors, and other creative professionals navigate the technology.
Whether they want to embrace AI or resist it — or even if they aren’t quite sure what position to take — I help people understand the legal, commercial, and creative issues associated with AI, while making space for the human part: the messy, necessary part.

Contracts and policies are more than just paperwork. Each one tells a different story about risk, control, power, and trust — and what happens if something (or someone) goes off script.
Legal documents should be straightforward enough to understand, flexible enough to move with real people and problems, and yet strong enough to enforce. I’m not a copy-and-paste sort of lawyer and don’t hide things behind expensive-sounding legalese.
-
There’s always some risk to every project or partnership. But understanding it early can help to keep things moving forward with confidence.
I help with sense-checks, risk assessments, and figuring out next steps. So wherever you are in the process - even if something’s already gone sideways - I can help structure the legal side, so the creative side can actually happen.

I help performers and public figures protect how their persona or likeness is used, and I help brands and production companies create content and work with talent fairly and transparently. Often in the context of digital replicas, identity, reputation, and brand strategy. I also support companies on their PR, marketing and advertising matters.
My work in this area often includes:
Talent agreements
Influencer and endorsement agreements
Voice cloning and digital replica agreements
Major publications on the topic include:
Personality Rights & Transparency under the EU AI Act
(European Audiovisual Observatory)Beauty & the Brand: Drafting Contracts for the Use of Someone’s Likeness (Journal of IP Law & Practice)
Regulatory & Legal Considerations for Influencer Marketing
(Handbook of Fashion Law, Oxford University Press)

Copyright determines who owns, controls, and gets paid for creative work — which makes it one of the most consequential areas of law for anyone creating things, on their own or with others.
I help my clients make sure their contracts accurately reflect that reality, especially in collaborative or cross-border projects where ownership, payment and credit can get complicated fast… especially when it comes to AI, where the old assumptions about authorship don't always hold.
In addition to copyright, I also advise on trade marks, moral rights, and neighbouring rights as well.
Highlights & credentials include:
Advising Dogecoin on its trade mark registration and enforcement strategy, to include that one time Elon Musk changed the Twitter logo…
Completed the specialist copyright programme at Harvard Law School — final paper focused on the personality theory of copyright, i.e. creative work is an extension of an author's mind, soul, and identity
Advising the UK Government on a dispute regarding the WINDRUSH word mark
Master’s thesis focused on streaming platforms like YouTube and Spotify, and how they handle musician royalty payment mechanisms
EUIPO - commissioned to write for the EU Intellectual Property Office on trade marks and voice cloning
published in the peer-reviewed Journal of IP Law & Practice and Licensing Journal
Guest lectures focusing on copyright (fair use/fair dealing) at the Turing Institute and Kings College London

I advise creators, platforms, and brands on how content actually behaves once it's live — especially on social media and creator-driven platforms. This sort of legal work is rooted in human rights and regulations, but pushed and tested daily by tech platforms, trends, politics and public opinion.
I regularly advise on:
User generated content, moderation
Platform T&Cs, Terms of Service
Online Safety Act 2023
GDPR, Data Protection Act
Communications Act 2003
Protection from Harassment Act 1997

Sometimes clients ask questions that are less about the specific deal or project in front of them, and more about protecting the business or people behind it.
Whatever the legal issue that comes up from running a creative business day to day, I try to approach things like in-house counsel would. I rarely just produce a document and move on — I like to stay close enough to understand how the memo, contract, or policy will actually get used, not just how it reads on paper.
Internal AI policies
NDAs and confidentiality
GDPR / data protection
Advertising compliance
PR and communications
Product / service commercialisation

Journalists and event organisers come to me because I don't need a pre-approved script — I can talk about AI, IP, and media law in a way that feels human - not like a robot. Or an overly formal lawyer!
I've spoken at film festivals, industry conferences, and universities, and given commentary for BBC World Service, BBC Radio 4, LBC, ITV News, Bloomberg, and Channel 5 News. Whatever the format, I try to make the law feel relevant rather than abstract.
Media commentary and interviews on AI and media law
Film festival panels and industry conference speaking
University lectures and public-facing talks

Training only works if it’s relevant and people actually remember it afterwards. That’s why I focus each session on what a specific audience actually needs.
A technical legal briefing for a production team looks nothing like a workshop for film students, and both look different from a boardroom session with a broadcaster.
I've delivered training for industry bodies like Bafta, ScreenSkills, and Bectu, as well as for large international media companies and smaller indies.
In-house training on AI, IP, and digital rights
Sessions for broadcasters, studios, and industry bodies
ScreenSkills and industry-body training sessions
