Consultancy+Training

My consultancy work is where law meets strategy - when the contract is just one part of a much bigger picture. Whether my clients are exploring new business models, navigating ethical grey zones, or rethinking internal processes to manage risks, I help them ask the right questions and define what matters. From there, we can create a path forward together.

I’m regularly asked to consult on business models, payment flows, IP ownership, and operational safeguards. I also have experience in helping to resolve tensions that arise between creative partners, or contractual problems that threaten a project or production. In each case, I want to ensure the legal foundation supports - not stifles! - my clients’ goals.

I also design and deliver guest lectures and tailored training for media companies, broadcasters, industry bodies, universities, and cultural institutions around the world. These sessions focus on legally grounded topics - like AI risk, performer rights, or deepfake regulation - but they’re designed for practical, real-world application.

Consultancy Projects

Created a risk-ranking system for proposed AI use cases in UK screen production, to help guide ScreenSkills’ internal strategy and public guidance. This included mapping legal risk factors across IP, data protection, attribution, and performer consent — tailored to different roles (crew, talent, post-production) and production phases.

Designed a bespoke framework to help ScreenSkills assess the pros and cons of using AI in different situations. The analysis covered 15 use cases for AI in film and TV productions, ranging from AI-generated scripts and beat boards to synthetic voice or image use in post-production. The evaluation of legal concerns such as copyright, confidentiality, data protection, consent were firmly rooted in a practical understanding of role involved (e.g. freelancers, talent, executives) and the particular phase of production.

Drafted AI-specific clauses and Codes of Practice for Film London members to use in film location agreements, to include advising on enforceable terms to restrict unauthorised scanning, replication, and re-use of content for AI training.

Conducted a full legal risk review of terms and conditions for several GenAI tools (including Adobe Firefly, Runway, Artlist, Midjourney, and Filmusage) for a UK-based creative content studio. Analysis covered terms of use, IP ownership, indemnities, and commercial exposure — all presented in a way that translated the fine print into tailored, practical insight.

Advised a production company on using AI to generate voiceovers and deepfakes for use in a historical crime documentary. Work included assessing the copyright and performer rights implications of using archive films, historical footage, public domain content, and viral media. Guidance covered ownership, moral rights, ethical use, and potential commercial clearance.
